Artis Stament:
Iconic
By: Emma Franklin
My pieces don’t exactly look alike, some are people, and others are landscapes. But they all share a common theme, they are all iconic photos that you would immediately recognize. Each painting is made from acrylic paint but appears to have different textures used, whether smooth strokes, fluffy dabs, or circular motions. My inspiration for this theme was the thought of people recognizing my paintings and how excited I would be when they would see them and point them out. The photos I chose already had that artistic look, making it easier to picture them as a painting. But for some, I used an app to implement different textures to enhance the look I originally intended to accomplish.
I did run into a few minor inconveniences when creating my work. Getting the lighting precise was most likely the biggest challenge throughout the process, but I learned some tips on how to do so. Some other challenges include fading two colours together, smoothing out the paint, shading, and matching the colours to the photos. But again, I gained learning experience and tips from those challenges.
I used a variety of different techniques with each painting. Some aspects to improve include looking at my reference photo more often along with time management and matching the colours to the pictures. But it’s a good learning experience for next time. I learned to have more patience when it comes to painting because it is a tedious process and requires much time, effort and patience. I also learned different techniques to improve my work like using contrasting shaped brushes for opposing textures or starting with a white base for water.
